 Alkek Velodrome

Location: 19008 Saums Road, (in Cullen Park), Houston

The Alkek Velodrome is one of only 33 velodromes in the United States. It was the site for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1988, as well as six different national cycling championships.

If you would like to experience cycling like a real Olympian, an afternoon at the Velodrome is right up your alley. Bike rentals are surprisingly affordable, so this definitely counts as low-budget fun. The hours available to the public are limited due to the numerous professional training sessions that are scheduled here; it is the only velodrome in Texas, so demand for track time is high. Interestingly enough, there are also sessions available for roller skating for in-line skating fanatics or speed skaters.

This is serious, high-speed biking and skating, so make sure you wear a helmet and other appropriate safety gear if you plan a trip to the Alkek Velodrome. Wear sunglasses also; the late afternoon sun can produce quite a glare. If you’ve ever had fantasies of being Lance Armstrong, here is where you can indulge them.

Experience the thrill of Olympic cycling at a rock-bottom price and do something athletic in Houston!
