Location: Inside the Houston Museum of Natural Science, One Hermann Circle Dr., Houston
The Burke Baker Planetarium is a fun side trip inside the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Explore the depths of space without leaving your chair, thanks to the most technologically advanced dome theatre in the world. It uses high-definition digital video technology to depict stars, galaxies, planets and other heavenly bodies.
You will get “closer” to these amazing natural phenomena here than you ever could by looking through a home telescope. The images are so realistic that they are used to train space shuttle astronauts to identify starfields. The programs are enhanced even further by the digital stereo surround sound. Planetariums have come a long way from showing “stars on the ceiling” to showing unique presentations designed to maximize the unique assets of a dome theatre.
The dome theatre’s digital medium makes it possible for the museum to develop and present its own shows related to current exhibits. The upgrades began in 1998 are continuing each year to make your Burke Baker Planetarium experience truly state-of-the-art. For those who are more interested in rock music than nebulae and comets, laser light shows are presented every Friday and Saturday night. Rock out to “Laserpalooza” or Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”
