Location: 2020 Post Office Street, Galveston Island

The Grand 1894 Opera House is a beautifully restored theatre that, true to its name, was originally built in 1894. The Grand is one of the few remaining theatres of its era in Texas and has a listing in the National Register of Historic Places.

Surviving major hurricanes in 1900, 1915, Hurricanes Carla and Alicia, as well as periods of neglect and misuse, the opera house was finally restored to its former glory beginning in 1974. When you walk into the theatre, it is like taking a step back in time to the heyday of American theatre. The indigo ceiling is dotted with stars, the railings are adorned with gold trim, and there is red velvet on the seats and curtains.

Sitting down to hear a symphony, Broadway musical, dance performance, play, or comedy routine is a wonderful experience at the Grand 1894 Opera House. They offer programming throughout the year that truly has something for everyone.

The kids’ theatre series is of special note if you are visiting Galveston with your whole family, although none of the shows would be inappropriate for young viewers.
