Location: Downtown Houston
The Houston Theater District is the one place you can
count on for magical happenings any night of the week, all year long. Did you know
that Houston is one of only five United States cities that has a permanent professional
opera, symphony, ballet, and theater? All of them “live” in the same seventeen-block
radius of downtown Houston.
On any given night, you can see the Houston Grand Opera,
the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony, Alley Theatre, a regional Tony-award-winning
theater company, Theatre Under the Stars (Houston’s own musical theatre company),
a presentation of Society for the Performing Arts (which brings an eclectic mix
of performers), or Da Camera, a jazz and chamber music organization.
The Houston
Theater District ranks second behind only New York City for the number of theater
seats within a concentrated downtown area, with nearly 13,000 seats for live performances
and 1,500 movie seats. There are many shows that the whole family will enjoy, and
with thirty
restaurants and six hotels a short distance away, seeing a play, ballet,
or symphony in Houston couldn’t be easier.
Sometimes people think these events are
too expensive, but with last-minute student and senior “rush” tickets and half-price
“sales” on slow nights, the theatre can be surprisingly affordable. |
