The Houston Zoo is a wonderful Houston landmark that your family will love. Who doesn’t love a trip to the zoo? Kids and adults alike will marvel at the new Natural Encounters exhibit featuring such diverse creatures as the scarlet ibis, meerkats, and blind mole rats.
The exhibit also features a living coral reef. Another favorite attraction for kids is the Children’s Zoo, which has many chances for up-close-and personal interaction with domestic farm animals, as well as educational information about the different habitats of Texas.
Most kids love the unique Wildlife Carousel, a giant merry-go-round with some very unusual animals to “ride.” The Houston Zoo offers free admission on city holidays (MLK Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the Friday after Thanksgiving) as a long-standing tradition and a gift to the people of Houston.
I would not recommend going on a holiday unless you want to spend an hour in the parking lot before you even get inside the zoo. It is best to go to the zoo on a day in fall or spring when the heat is not so intense; many animals “hide” during the day when it is hot.
