Location: 300 Medical Drive, Lake Jackson
Sea Center Texas is full of educational
displays, aquaria and replicas of the marine life on the Texas coast. When you walk
in, you are immediately greeted by fiberglass replicas of a state record dolphin,
shark, tarpon and blue marlin “swimming” above you in the lobby.
The largest exhibit
is a 50,000-gallon aquarium filled with large animals that live in the Gulf of Mexico.
Did you know there are several kinds of sharks that live off the Texas coast? You
can see them here.
The “star” of the show is a 300-pound Queensland grouper named
Gordon. There are three other aquarium habitats, including an artificial reef featuring
colorful tropical fish. Fun for the kids is a “touch pool” that has animals such as blue crabs, hermit crabs, clams, snails and even anemones. Volunteers answer
questions about the sea creatures and help visitors interact with them properly.
Another unique feature of the Sea Center is a fish hatchery—the largest red drum
hatchery in the world. If you get a tour of this area, you get to watch the life
cycle of this fish. Then, if you brought your pole, you can learn how to catch them
at the youth fishing pond! |
