 Tiki Lake

Location: 4800 Schurmier Road, Houston

Tiki Lake is a huge natural “swimming hole” right in the middle of Houston. Its 40 acres of water are fed by a natural underground source. It is a popular spot for swimming minus the burning chlorinated water and diving boards.

Feel like you are swimming at an isolated spot out in the country, but enjoy the convenience of real toilets and concessions. It is like lake swimming but a little cleaner, and you may see bass, perch, or even turtles swimming alongside you in the cool water. If you have your scuba gear handy, it can be a good place to practice, although the growth of water plants can make it seem like you are diving in heavy “seaweed.”

For families, there are picnic and barbeque facilities. There are no lifeguards, so children must be confident swimmers. If your kids are not confident swimmers, the management will provide a free lifejacket for the afternoon—just ask!

Do you have a canoe? You are welcome to take it out on the lake. Plan an afternoon at Tiki Lake and swim, sunbathe, and float around the lake to your heart’s content. Finish the day off with some grilling good times and watch the sun set over the water.
