Houston
Fire Museum
Location: 2403 Milam Street, Houston
Time: Tue-Sat 10am-4pm
The Houston Fire
Museum is a must-see destination for every little boy or girl who wants to be a
firefighter when he or she grows up, and for every dad who used to want to be a
fireman. The
museum features items from the history of the Houston Fire Department, which
began as a “bucket” brigade shortly after the city was founded in 1838.
Most of
the exhibits are strictly hands-off, but there is one exhibit that is just for
kids. For kids to understand
more about firefighting and firefighting history, the Museum has the Junior
Firehouse Educational Interactive Area. Kids can
try on six miniature bunker coats and six helmets to simulate the look and feel
of what firefighters really wear.
There is
a Fire Safety Tips Mural that children may contribute to using the provided
markers. If they want to pretend they are off to fight a fire, they can climb
into an E-1 Fire Truck Cab, steer the big steering wheel, and “speed off” to
their destination.
There is
even a 1938 antique fire truck to climb into and play around for a feel of how
it was in the “old days.”
