Museum
of Health & Medical Science
Location: 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston
Time: Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun Noon-5pm
The Museum of Health & Medical Science is a relatively new addition to the
Houston museum scene, having opened in March 1996, but has already hosted over
one and a half million visitors since then.
When you
step into the museum, the first thing you notice is a giant mouth complete with
huge, boulder-like teeth. The mouth beckons to be explored, and you stroll down
the esophagus into the Amazing Body Pavilion, the centerpiece of this hands-on
education in health and wellness.
The
Pavilion is a larger-than-life walking tour of the inner workings of the human
body, featuring a 10-foot-tall walk-through brain, interactive kiosks with more
information about the human anatomy, and a massive 27 ½ foot intestine. Three
Fantastic Illusion presentations communicate health and wellness information
about the lungs, heart and brain through convincing audio and video.
Guests
can watch a skeleton ride a bike, test their hearing, and try their hand at
several safety demonstrations. After you have walked through the whole body,
visit the peaceful Sensory Garden.
The
By-You City is designed for kids under age seven to learn about the
environment’s impact on their health through fun presentations, puppet shows,
and hands-on activities.
