Apollo Moon Landing Anniversary celebrates astronaut Neil Armstrong’s taking “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” 36 years ago when Apollo 11 touched down on the lunar surface.
As most of America watched breathlessly, the United States of America was declared winner of the international race to the moon and NASA’s space program reached new heights. Today, the Apollo Anniversary marks what some believe to be the 20th century’s most outstanding achievement.
Originally a goal described by the late President John F. Kennedy in a speech before Congress on May 25, 1962, Apollo’s lunar landing and the space program also pushed the development of the integrated circuit, better known as the computer chip, and the personal computer as well as the scientific exploration of the moon’s surface.
As the 36th Apollo Anniversary is celebrated, many Americans will remember those days when the Apollo 11 Astronauts returned as heroes and what was once an imaginary fantasy became reality for the Americans of all ages.
Today, President George Bush’s “Vision for U.S. Space Exploration” includes a return to the moon by U.S. astronauts during the next 15 years and, ultimately, the development of new technologies to make it possible to travel to Mars and beyond.
