The Houston International Jazz Festival launches its 15th season with three days of varied jazz stylings designed to appeal to hard-core jazz aficionados along with well as newcomers to the popular genre. Located in downtown Houston’s Bayou Place, plan to spend the day shopping, museum hopping or visiting the new downtown aquarium.
Beginning Friday, serving up a three-hour helping of some of the best jazz west of the Mississippi, the Festival will welcome the popular Hiroshima in its tribute to Asian jazz with opening acts by the Summer Jazz Workshop.
On Saturday, enjoy the Latin stylings of Tito Puente, Jr. with music appealing to jazz fans as well as those Latin beat followers of the late, great Tito Puente, Sr. Once again, a performance by the Summer Jazz Workshop will open the evening.
The annual Mayor’s Sunday Brunch, hosted by Houston Mayor Bill White, will begin at 11:30am at the stunning Wortham Theatre Center and later that day, audiences who prefer the smooth sounds of contemporary jazz can sit back and enjoy “Guitars and Saxes” with Mindi Abair, Jeff Golub, Warren Hill and Wayman Tisdale.
