Location: Houston Museum of Natural History
Everybody loves a mummy and now visitors to the Houston Museum of Natural History can get up close and personal as “Mummy: The Inside Story” reveals secrets Egyptian mummies have jealously guarded for ages. So how do scientists learn about mummies? Until now, they simply unwrapped them, layer by layer, which really wasn’t so simple.
Now, modern technology makes it possible for researchers to learn much more about mummies without disturbing their wrappings – and the current exhibit provides insight into two worlds. Meet Nesperennub, a mummy that has remained unopened since it was sealed by embalmers almost 3000 years ago.
Through stunning, 3-D footage, fly through Nesperennub’s digitally reconstructed mummy and get the inside story from forensic scientists who detect what killed him. Discover how old he was when he died and determine his gender, to see if the hieroglyphs adorning his mummy are telling the truth. In Gathering Data from Mummies, a brief video presentation explores how 3-D technology can reveal the secrets of an unopened mummy.
Explore Egyptian history, the fascination with the process of mummification. Tour of the Mummy presents a three-dimensional flight through Nesperennub’s mummified body. Then meet Nesperennub. Examine his inner sarcophagus, which still contains the undisturbed mummy.
